It’s great because it has parental controls to allow parents to set screen time limits, reading goals, and filter content for specific ages.Įven though it doesn’t have every kids book you would find at a bookstore, it does have thousands to choose from, including favorites like the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series as well as a lot of books that are required reading for most grade levels.įor a free bonus, it really makes Kindle Kids a great deal in my opinion. This subscription service can be used across multiple devices and includes access to free kids movies, books, audiobooks, apps, educational games, and ad-free kids radio. Whenever you buy a Kindle Kids, Amazon throws in a free year of Amazon Kids+. Okay, this part really sealed the deal for me. We haven’t had any issues with breaking or software glitches, but it’s good to know that we have that in case anything happens. I love that because kids can be tough on their things- especially electronics. If the cover somehow doesn’t protect the Kindle or there is any kind of issue, the extended warranty will take care of it. They’re easily wiped clean and really don’t scratch or show wear. My daughter has had hers for over a year now, and even though it has been tossed into her backpack, dropped a thousand times, and been taken everywhere, it looks new. The covers come in a range of colors and designs and are included in the price. There are many! Here is a rundown of what I think makes Kindle Kids worth buying: Cute & kid-proof covers The big thing for me that sets the Kindle Kids apart is that there are no ads, whereas the adult version has ads on the Lock Screen (you can pay to have these removed, but I love that they aren’t there at all for the kids edition). The kids line also has a simpler, pared down interface that is much easier for kids to navigate. They’ve also just come out with a Kindle Paperwhite Kids that has the same perks as the Kindle Kids but the crisper resolution of the adult Paperwhite edition plus a slightly larger screen. What sets it apart from the adult version?įirst, the Kindle Kids is really the same as a basic adult Kindle with a few added (and valuable!) perks, which I’ll get into later. The Kindle Kids is a line of Kindles made specifically with kids in mind. If you’re not familiar with them, though, a Kindle is Amazon’s e-reader that can store hundreds of books and audiobooks. I’m sure most of you know what a Kindle is. Please read full disclosure for more information. This post contains affiliate links, which means I’ll receive a commission if you purchase through my links, at no extra cost to you. I’ll also cover some of its downsides and who I think would not benefit from it. Here’s my review of the Kindle Kids including what it is, what sets it apart from the adult version, and who it’s best suited for. Since I just bought my second Kindle Kids this week for my 10 year old (my 12 year old has the other one), I definitely think they’re great, but they might not be great for everyone. With Amazon’s line of Kindle Kids devices that cost a bit more than the base Kindle for adults, you may be asking yourself: Is a Kindle Kids really worth it? They’re handy and portable and can store a ton of books, helping to minimize piles of kids books taking over your house. If you have a kid who loves to read or one you wish would read more, you may have thought about buying a Kindle.

Shortly after descending, a launchpad appears in the secluded areas, to allow players to get out, only if players from one team remain in those areas, with the color of the launchpad matching that team. At 0:50, the central dome starts descending and by 0:45 it seals off the center area, finally closing entirely at 0:40. At 0:55, another message appears, warning the center area is about to close. Two platforms at the large center area also descend to ground level, making more room for combat and inkable turf. At 1:40, the boxes descend to seal off the side areas, preventing access to them for the remainder of the match, finally closing entirely at 1:30. When the remaining match time is 1:50, a warning appears saying the side areas are about to seal off. These three serve as containment chambers. There are also two glass boxes on each side of the stage. That always felt missing from the first game.Īnyway, if we're comparing the two games, there's one respect in which I think everyone will agree the first game was superior without any further argument, and that's the final boss of the story mode. The Bunker Games contains a large center area with a glass dome suspended above it. I do appreciate how Splatoon 2 started including single-player mechanics in the multiplayer stages, though, even if this has mostly been confined to Shifty Station. I need to reorient myself every time I look at it, whereas in Splatoon 1 I always knew where I was and where the action was happening. I like Splatoon 2 better as a game overall and have played far more of it (split Joy-Con aiming is heavenly), but the map overlay is comparatively disorienting because you don't have a persistent sense of geography in your peripheral vision or at the back of your mind. And it's evident to me that the maps in 2, oriented around well-defined centre zones or two-way corridors that easily fit into your field of vision on the main screen as you spawn and make your way towards the other side, lack the "width" of certain maps in the first game as a compromise for losing the second screen. That map was designed from top to bottom as a showcase for the GamePad and as a test of your situational awareness for the action on the knobs on either end of the axis of symmetry. Practically every map is getting ported, so perhaps we'll see Saltspray Rig make the jump eventually, but I'm not surprised that so far it has been left out. It makes a bigger difference than you think, and flicking on the overlay every few seconds in Splatoon 2 is only a partial substitute. I'm not sure why everyone is stepping around the obvious when it comes to Splatoon 1's map design: its synergy with the always-on second-screen map on the GamePad. (Granted, a lot of Splatoon's maps are now being released in Splatoon 2 through updates, which is great, but I'd be interested to know if everyone here prefers S1 or S2's maps on the whole.) What do you think, fellow Splatoon fans? Do you prefer S1 or S2's stages? Or do you not see much difference in quality? Right now I find myself pining for the return of some of S1's great stages. It's telling that the most interesting stages tend to be the temporary Shifty Station ones from Splatfests, some of which have been awesome. While Splatoon 2 is a better game than Splatoon in just about every respect, as a very active player I genuinely feel as if Splatoon's maps were more interesting and creative than the maps in Splatoon 2.Īrowana Mall, Saltspray Rig, Bluefin Depot, Moray Towers, Camp Triggerfish, Ancho-V Games, Mahi-Mahi Resort - all examples of stages with unique visual styles and gimmicks, from tall thin pathways, mandatory walls to climb, rising platforms, changing water depths and more.Ĭomparatively, while they're fine stages, The Reef, Musselforge Fitness, Starfish Mainstage, Goby Arena, MakoMart - a lot of Splatoon 2's stages seem quite similar in design and have less variety on the whole. You have the option to write your email messages in either plain text, rich text, HTML or MultiMarkdown. It usually replies to the primary sender, but if you want to respond to all persons, just press Command-Shift-E. By pressing Command-E, you get a fast entry dialog box for entering your answer. Often you only need to make a quick reply to an email thread without any signature at the bottom. It creates a new task and adds a URL to the specific email message. You can send emails directly to OmniFocus by right-clicking the message and select the submenu ‘dispatch’ and choose ‘Create OmniFocus Task,’ and a new task window will appear. No more problems when Apple updates Mail and makes the OmniFocus plug-in stop working. I do all my planning both for work and private projects in OmniFocus so it’s nice to see that there is built-in integration with OmniFocus, a program that I can’t live without. When a new email arrives, you get a nice looking system notification through OS X standard notification system. A great feature because I no longer need to have the mail application showing all the time. The icon works as a toggle, so if you press it, the Airmail application becomes the front application, but if you push it again, the Airmail window disappears. It is black when there is no new mail, but turns blue and shows the number of new emails. Menubar IconĪnother great feature is the small icon in the menubar that shows a little airplane symbol. Very convenient, and cuts down on mistakenly sending email from the wrong return address. to be able to switch between your accounts.ĭepending on the one you chose, Airmail will use the correct reply address and signature specifically for that account. You can either switch by clicking on the small icons on the bottom left column in the application window, but a quicker way is just to use ctrl–1, ctrl–2 or ctrl–3, etc. There is an option to use a unified inbox, but for me, it’s much better to have my work emails separated from my private ones. I have two private email addresses and one for work that I have configured in the application. When setting up several email accounts in Airmail, it’s easy for the user to switch between them. I mean, really fast! I just bought a new MacBook Pro 15″ Retina with a 2.5Ghz Intel i7, so it’s probably not the best computer to pass any judgment on the speed of an application, but my computer at work is a three-year-old MacBook Pro, and Airmail feels very fast on that machine as well. I’ll go through the things that persuaded me to switch.Īirmail is fast. The feature list is comprehensive to the point of me not wanting to list all the features here, but follow the link to get a lowdown on all the things the application can do. I wanted to be able to have both of my private and work email accounts in the same program but have them separate to make life easier, and after searching the net, I found an application called Airmail. For the first time in many years, I was on the lookout for a new email client software. Anyway, Apple Mail has become a slow, unreliable application although they have fixed some of the more severe problems in the latest release. The blame has to be put on Google for not following standards but is a significant player you can pretty much set your own rules. So they use tags instead of folders, etc. I have my email domain on Google Apps, and I know that Gmail doesn’t follow the IMAP standard, instead choosing to do it their way. It’s weird because the iOS Mail app is rock solid. Airmail, my new favorite mail clientĪfter Mac OS X 10.8, Apple Mail has been going downhill by every update. But hopefully, they’ll fix that in the coming months. In a perfect world, it should have been a universal app. Yay! The only complaint is that they did the app for iPhone only and not an iPad version. It also syncs your settings from your Mac OS X application, so now I have an HTML signature on my iPhone. Now there’s even an excellent version for Airmail for iOS. And let’s face it, Google changed a lot from the original IMAP standard, so everyone had to keep up. I guess Apple has probably fixed a lot of the problems they had back then when connecting to Gmail. I’m still using Airmail now, two years after I wrote this post. It never crashes, and the search is fast and excellent. Still my favorite email client, and I’m now also blessed with a version for iPad and my iPhone. The best budget microphones deliver the desired results at a price you can afford. Something like the Audio Technica AT2020 mic works simply with USB connectivity and has a very nice audio output.
